Tea Tree Oil contains a vast number of active
ingredients. The amounts of ingredients vary greatly, depending on climate
and soil. The healing power of the oil varies accordingly. Of all the
different kinds of Melaleuca, only the Melaleuca alternifolia holds the
magnitude of beneficial, soothing effects.
The most important healing substances of Tea Tree Oil are
Terpinen and
Cineol. In 1985, these
standards were agreed upon for a beneficial Melaleuca alternifolia:
At
least 30 percent terpinen. Terpinen (Terpinen-4-ol) possesses an
especially strong healing power for skin diseases.
No more than
5 percent Cineol. Cineol soothes
colds, but can also aggravate the mucous membranes. This can lead to burning
sensations in case of an overdose.
Follow these quality characteristics
when purchasing Tea Tree Oil:
The natural percentage of cineol in Tea Tree Oil
varies between 2 and 65 percent. The less cineol (<5%) the Tea Tree Oil
contains, the better the quality. North Australian Tea Tree Oils (New South
Wales) contain a high level of Terpinen-4-ol and little Cineol. The Nambucca
Tea Tree Oil is located in New South Wales, which makes it the world's best
Tea Tree Oil. www.teatreeoil.net
Pay attention to the list of active ingredients. Oils of lower quality are
often diluted with Cineol. You can recognize such an oil because of its
sweet aroma and the smell of camphor.
